You’ve booked an in home session with your favorite photographer. Now what? You get a date and time scheduled and wait. Your photographer shows up and there are things everywhere. You have to move toys out of the way, the dishes out of the sink and make the bed. Instead of spending time taking pictures, you spend half of it picking up your house. Oops. Sometimes you don’t think about all these things when you invite the photographer into your home. Here are some things to look for when prepping your home for your indoor session to avoid the rush during your time together.

Tips to prep for an in home session

  1. Pick up your house! This one sounds easy right? It is, but don’t forget to hide even the things that might linger on your counters or side tables. Declutter your counters from anything that is not necessary. Grab a box to put all the extra items into and move it out of the way. This goes for any room you’ll want pictures taken in. All those books just laying on top of your night stand or the coat thrown on the floor of your room. It is easy to walk right by these items and not even think twice.

  2. Think about where you want the photos. Typically the best locations for in home sessions are bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms. However, you can utilize any space if it has good lighting. Try and avoid rooms where there is hardly any natural light.

  3. Open those blinds and turn off the lights! Maybe you aren’t taking pictures in the kitchen, but you are in the adjacent living room. Turn off those kitchen lights! The camera will pick up the yellowish orange light. Natural light is way more appealing. By opening all the blinds in your house, you’ll bring in the light to surrounding areas as well.

  4. Remove the things you don’t like. Sometimes we have a throw pillow out, but we hate it. Or an item that was gifted to us that we feel the need to display. Take it away. You don’t want to see these items in your pictures and be disappointed that they are in there.

  5. Don’t deep clean your house. Sometimes we feel the need to pick up every bit of everything we see. A lot of the dust will go unnoticed in the pictures, so don’t waste your time if you don’t have it.

  6. Just relax and have fun! Doing a session in your home is one of the most fun things you can do. It captures you in the space you spend your life and that is something to enjoy.
